FPV is more fun with other people. The community is large, technically sophisticated, and generally welcoming to newcomers who put in some effort before asking questions.

The largest FPV discussion forums:

  • r/fpv (~350k members): General FPV discussion, questions, build showcases, footage. Check the FAQ and Wiki before posting.
  • r/Multicopter: The older, broader community. Deep archives.
  • r/multicopterbuilds: Build help, build showcases.
  • r/TinyWhoop: Specifically for indoor and whoop pilots.
  • r/fpv Buy/Sell Trade: Used gear marketplace (check seller history before transacting).

Real-time chat and quick help:

  • FPV Freedom Coalition: Beginner-friendly, active community

The largest FPV racing organization. Hundreds of local chapters hold regular race events.

  1. Find a chapter: multigp.com — search by location
  2. Show up: Most chapters welcome spectators and beginners. You don’t need race-spec gear to join.
  3. Get involved: Help set up courses, volunteer for timing, fly casual when races finish.

MultiGP hosts an annual Global Qualifier and championship event. Top local pilots compete at the national level.

Not into racing? Many cities have casual flying groups that meet regularly. Find them via:

  • Facebook local FPV groups
  • Reddit regional threads
  • Nextdoor or local hobby shop bulletin boards
  • AMA (Academy of Model Aeronautics) field directories — AMA-chartered fields often have FPV pilot groups

The Academy of Model Aeronautics operates and charters thousands of flying fields across the US. AMA membership ($75/year) provides:

  • Insurance coverage ($2.5M liability)
  • Access to AMA-chartered fields
  • FRIA designation (no Remote ID required at chartered fields)
  • Representation in regulatory discussions

AMA membership is good value if you fly regularly at fields.

Major FPV events worldwide:

  • MultiGP International Open: Annual championship event
  • Let’s Fly: Regional FPV festival
  • Local drone racing leagues: Check MultiGP for regional racing near you
  • Maker Faires: Often include FPV flying demonstrations
